Admission with International Baccalaureate Diploma

An IB is a secondary school leaving certificate issued by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). It serves as proof of the general university entrance qualification.

It is considered a non-Austrian school leaving certificate (even if the exams have been taken at a school in Austria), but it is considered equivalent and therefore no nostrification is necessary, provided that certain criteria are fulfilled.

What are the criteria for recognition of an IB?

You have to have at least 24 points out of six subjects. If you can't reach the minimum points of 24, you won't get an IB Diploma but an IB Certificate. It's not possible to be admitted at the University of Vienna with an IB Certificate.

What advantages do holders of an IB diploma have?

As opposed to holders of other non-EU/EEA secondary school certificates, holders of an IB diploma do not have to prove the special entrance qualification ("statement of admission"). The proficiency in German, however, has to be proved on B2 level.

Applicants holding non-EU-/EEA citizenship and having evidence of proficiency in German on B2 level can be admitted personally after having done the U:SPACE registration. If this is not the case, they wait for the admission letter. With the admission letter they will receive a student's visa.
